WSU Community Comes Together to Celebrate Black History Month

Department: Office of Multicultural Student Services

Join WSU and the surrounding community in celebrating Black History Month throughout the month of February with potlucks, film nights, professional development workshops and more.

Dr. Carter G. Woodson established Black History Month in 1915 out of concern that the contributions of Black Americans were ignored and misrepresented. Today, communities around the country celebrate Black History Month by coming together to celebrate Black history, culture, lifestyle and the talents and contributions African Americans bring to society.

“Black History Month is a time to come together and celebrate who we are as a people,” said Donna Arnold, Associate Director of the African American Student Center. “It’s not only about recognizing African Americans but those who have supported us and continue to lift us up.”

Throughout the month, the African American Student Center and partners including the Black Student Union, National Pan-Hellenic Council, Associated Students of Washington State University and other registered student organizations will host a variety of events that shed light on African American history and culture.

Some of the events include the Annual Unity Banquet hosted by BSU and the Thirteenth Annual Multicultural Fundraiser hosted by the ASWSU Office of Inclusion. The fundraiser will focus on raising money for student-led leadership conferences for high school students including VIBES, CASHE, and SHAPING.
